What to Expect in your Insurance Claim Interview

After being involved in a car accident, you should contact your insurance company and file a claim as soon as possible. When you file your claim, your insurance company will request you submit to an interview with them regarding the incident.

Why and I being Interviewed?

It’s important to know that this interview is not an interrogation, just a step your insurance company takes to start their fact-finding process. This interview assists your insurance company with determining fault in your claim and evaluating its dollar value. It can also help solve any discrepancies between stories.

The interview will take place shortly after your accident has happened, in many cases within the same business day of filing. Some companies will even conduct the interview while filing the initial claim on the phone with you. The reason why your insurance company will want to conduct the interview so soon after the accident is the details will likely be fresh in your mind and you can give the most accurate statement possible as to what happened.

What can I expect in this interview?

Your insurance company may wish to record the interview, which they are by law required to ask you for permission to do so, and you are legally allowed to ask that they do not record any portion of your statement. Your interviewer will likely ask a number of questions about the accident and it may seem overwhelming, however they are just trying to get as complete a picture as possible, so it is important to answer as honestly and accurately as possible. If you do not remember something or you aren’t sure if you remember correctly, it is okay and highly advisable to say so.
